Preventing Distributor Drive Gear Failure
Application: Intended for all Gear‐driven distributors
Symptom:Replacement distributors installed into replacement or remanufactured engines result in cam gear or distributor gear failure.
Cause:Replacement distributors installed into replacement or remanufactured engines result in cam gear or distributor gear failure.
Solution:Prime the oil pump using a drill with an attached intermediate shaft. Use drill in clockwise setting until oil pressure develops. Also, before installing the distributor, make sure to lubricate the gear with a coating of grease.
*IMPORTANT NOTE:When installing the replacement distributor, it is important to match the replacement with the original. Comparison points are laid out in the diagram and picture below.
- Check the play on the camshaft for proper spec
- Don’t force crank engine or starter into place to position the gear teeth
- Make sure that the material of the distributor and cam gear match
- Ensure that after installation the up and down play of the distributor shaft is between .15 and .30
